Non Profit Wish List

Each month we post a wish list for a different organization in town. It is our hope that people in the community who see this list might be able to help meet these needs in some way. If you have a wish list you would like posted, please send us an email with your attached wish list. If everyone gives just a little, we can help others.

The mission of River Legacy Foundation is to preserve and enhance land along the Trinity River and its tributaries as an extraordinary educational, recreational and natural resource.

Our History

The history of River Legacy Foundation is a tribute to the volunteer citizens of Arlington who stepped forward with a vision to preserve a natural asset of woodlands along the Trinity River within the boundaries of the City of Arlington. In 1988 the River Legacy Foundation was chartered as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to collaborate with the City's Park and Recreation Department to preserve hundreds of acres of land along the Trinity River in North Arlington.

In 1990 the 376-acre River Legacy Parks opened to the public with the first phase of the master plan completed. More than $3 million was raised through public and private sources.

In 1996 the Living Science Center was completed at a cost of approximately $5 million, entirely funded by private donors including the Sid W. Richardson Foundation. The Center has become the home of the Foundation's multi-faceted environmental and natural science education programs. The Foundation deeded the Center to the City of Arlington as a gift to the community. The Foundation has a 25-year management services contract with the City of Arlington to operate and provide environmental education programs at the Living Science Center.

In 2004 eight miles of continuous paved trail along the Trinity River opened with the completion of a $2.4 million capital improvement project. With the help of the Foundation, Arlington became the first and only community to complete its portion of the regional Trinity Trails project. Today River Legacy Parks encompasses 1,300 acres along the Trinity River.

Other

Sixteen staff work at the River Legacy Foundation and the Living Science Center. This includes full-time and part-time staff, teachers, naturalists, administrative support, marketing and the leadership team. Volunteers are an integral part of the River Legacy organization. Approximately 300 volunteers donate thousands of hours each year. Our corps of volunteers is diverse in their expertise, ethnicity/race, gender and age. Not only do they help with three annual special events, they also staff the receptionist desk, the gift store and assist teachers and naturalists with class preparation and animal care.
